 Coastal Flood Advisory, High Surf Advisory  Statement as of 4:33 PM EST on February 7, 2016

... Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 10 am EST Monday...
... High surf advisory remains in effect until 10 am EST Monday...

* location: Sandbridge Beach south into Outer Banks Currituck.

* Timing: minor to possibly moderate flooding expected within a few hours
either side of the high tide cycle this evening and Monday morning.

* Waves: nearshore surf of 8 to 10 feet will lead to beach erosion.

* Impacts: inundation of water in and near low-lying coastal areas could lead
to Road closures and flooding of property.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in the advisory
area. Life threatening rip currents and localized beach erosion will also be
possible.

A coastal Flood Advisory indicates that onshore winds... wave action and / or
tides will combine to create flooding of low areas along the shore... and near
tidal rivers and creeks. Be prepared for the possibility of Road closures and
minor flooding of properties. If travel is necessary... do not attempt to drive
through water of unknown depth.

All tide heights are relative to mean lower low water.
Time of the high total tides are approximate to the nearest hour.
Total tide combines astro tide and surge.
Flood category based on total tide.

NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Wakefield Virginia
139 am EST Monday Feb 8 2016

Synopsis...
low pressure off the Carolina coast overnight intensifies while
lifting northeast to a position well off the middle Atlantic coast
Monday morning. Another area of low pressure dives southeast from
the Great Lakes Monday...then moves across the area Monday night
and early Tuesday. High pressure slowly returns Wednesday through
Friday.

&&

Near term /until 6 am this morning/...
strong coastal surface low pressure east of ilm begins to track east-northeast and away from
the CST overnight. Back edge of precipitation (mnly rain west/ occasional ip) has reached
in fartherest west extent across southeast Virginia/NE NC and starting to pull to
the east (though sloly). Xcpg continued precipitation near all the CST overnight though
trend will lower by lt at night. Otherwise...continued windy along the coast.
Some decreasing cloudiness inland...especially across the Piedmont after mdngt. Low temperatures
from the u20s-l30s to M-u30s coastal areas.

&&

Short term /6 am this morning through Wednesday/...
appears region will squeeze out a near normal Feb day Monday ahead of what
the guidance shows as an extended prd with below normal temperatures. Forecast area will be between
the departing ocean low and apprchg upl level low from the northwest. 12z
data continues to slow the precipitation with this ftr...not crossing the mts
until around 21z or so. Expect a pt sunny day with any showers confined to
areas west of i95 corridor late. Highs m40s-l50s.

Next short wave prognosticated to cross the forecast area Monday night. The track of the ftr will
be critical as history as proven that not much in the way of precipitation
occurs south of the track with a rthr tight precipitation gradient to its north.
This ftr will also have a trailing trough / boundary which has ME a bit
concerned. Precipitation starts off as rain showers Monday evening...but given how
potent this systm is...can not rule out a burst of snow showers aftr
midnight as the ftr tracks east across the northern counties region. Accumls
would be less than an inch as temperatures drop to near freezing. Target area
here would be northern half of forecast area west of the ches Bay (along and
north of a Virginia rt 360 line). A rain/snow shower mix closer to the coast
with lows in the m30s.

First short wave exits to the NE Tuesday with rain/snow showers lingering the
longest across northestern sctns where likely probability of precipitation will be maintained. Latest
suite of models now show anthr lull in precipitation Tuesday afternoon across southern
half of forecast area before the next short wave dives southeast across the northestern counties Tuesday
evening. This allows for some prtl afternoon sun (mix of clouds/sun)...
allowing temperatures to rise to between 40-45. Despite temperatures well above
freezing...cold air aloft along with critical thicknesses sprts
mainly snow showers xcpt for a mix of rain/snow showers along the coast.

Tuesday night will feature the next short wave tracking across northern Virginia with scattered
snow showers. This could also put down a small accumulate across the Northern
Neck/lower Maryland Eastern Shore aftr sunset. Otw...pt cloudy. Lows m20s-l30s.

Upper level trough prevails across the NE Continental U.S. Wednesday. Anthr weak short wave dives
down the back side of the upper trough but this one tracks north of
the forecast area. Kept isolated snow showers across northestern areas through the morning
hours. Otw...pt sunny and cold. Highs u30s-l40s.

&&

Long term /Wednesday night through Sunday/...
cold trough of low pressure gets carved out across the eastern Continental U.S.
For the duration of the long term period. Dry west-northwest flow aloft will
limit any precipitation chances through the period....with below temperatures
remaining in place. Highs Thursday-sun mainly in the 30s to low 40s. Lows
through the period generally in the teens and 20s.

&&

Aviation /07z Monday through Friday/...
low pressure off the NC CST...will intensify as it moves NE into the
northern Atlantic during today taking precipitation with it. North winds will continue
to gust between 20 and 30 knots early this morng...esply at
orf...ecg...and sometimes sby. Then...mainly VFR conditions are
expected at all taf sites through much of today...as forecast area will
be between exiting low pressure in the Atlantic and a cold front
approaching from the west. Then...from this eveng through Wednesday...a strong
upper level low will drop east-southeast from the Great Lakes/Ohio Valley into the NE
U.S. This could provide periods of MVFR to IFR conditions...as
several shortwaves rotate around the upper low and over the region.
These waves could produce periods of snow showers Tuesday night through
Wednesday. The upper low will begin to lift well NE of the area Wednesday night
with hi pressure building in through Friday.

&&

Marine...
low pressure continues to deepen off the Carolina coast
into tonight...then quickly heads NE and well out to sea on Monday.
Gale warnings are in effect for all of the coastal waters...the
Currituck Sound...and the mouth of the ches Bay (for winds up to 40-
45 kt). Sca's remain in place for the reminder of the ches Bay and
the eastern Virginia rivers. Seas will continue to increase to 8-14 feet
(highest s) by tonight. Nearshore waves will reach 8-10 feet from Virginia
Beach south...so high surf advisory for southern beaches will remain in
place. Waves will reach 5-6 feet at the mouth of the Bay. As the
coastal low pulls away...winds should diminish during Monday morning
with gales/sca's coming to and end. Seas will be slow to subside
into at least Tuesday...so will likely need to replace gales with
sca's for the coastal waters. Another round of Small Craft Advisory conditions may
occur Wed/Thu.

&&

Hydrology...
river flood warnings remain in effect for the Blackwater above
Franklin...Nottoway at Sebrell...cashie at Windsor. See flsakq for
details.

&&

Tides/coastal flooding...
coastal flood and high surf advisories remain in effect for Virginia
Beach and coastal Currituck County through Monday morning...as
strong low pressure moves NE off the southeast and middle Atlantic
coasts. 30 knots NE/north-northeast winds(40-45 knots gusts) will build seas to 8-12ft
nearshore. High seas and prolonged NE flow may cause beach erosion
and possibly some dune erosion. These conditions will also cause
flooding of low areas along the shore during high tides. Expect
minor coastal flooding a few hours before and after the high tides
this evening and again Monday morning. (Moderate coastal flooding
may be possible along the northern obx with Monday morning's high
tide cycle. Farther up the Eastern Shore on the Atlantic
side...may need a coastal Flood Advisory Monday morning during high
tide...and possibly into Tuesday. But...at this point...it looks
marginal and uncertain...so will continue to monitor this area.
