Fire Weather Warning
Statement as of 12:02 PM MDT on August 21, 2008
... Red flag warning remains in effect until 9 PM MDT this
evening...
A red flag warning remains in effect until 9 PM MDT this evening.
Southwest will continue to increase... with wind speeds of of 20
to 30 mph gusting to near 40 mph this afternoon. These gusty winds will
combine with warm temperatures and relative humidity of 10 to 15 percent
this afternoon and early evening. This will bring a high potential
for extreme fire weather conditions including extensive spotting
and rapid growth potential of any existing fires.
A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now... or will shortly. Critically dry
fuels... combined with strong winds... low relative humidity... and
warm temperatures will create explosive fire growth potential.

NWS Forecaster Discussion
741 fxus65 kslc 211618 afdslc Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City Utah 1018 am MDT Thursday Aug 21 2008 Synopsis...storm system moving east across the northern rockies will drop a weak cold front into northern Utah this evening. Winds will increase this afternoon as this feature approaches. && Discussion...cold front over southern Idaho is moving southward and will move into northern Utah by 6 PM. Upper level support is lacking initially and the main influence of this system will be a gradual wind shift to the north upon passage. Front should make it south of Provo before stalling out by morning. This will provide a cooler day on Friday but the front will retreat over the weekend bringing above normal temperatures back to northern Utah for the weekend. There is a marginal increase in low level moisture and this will come into play tomorrow and Saturday as distrubances ride over the frontal boundary generating isolated high-elevation thunderstorms. In the meantime...confluent flow aloft will inhibit activity today. No update to the forecast this morning. && Aviation...VFR conditions will prevail throughout the day at the slc terminal. South winds are expected to shift to the west between 20z and 22z as a cold front drops into northern Utah. Gusts along and behind this front may exceed 30 kts at the terminal through 02z...resulting in erratic cross winds...before winds shift to the north. There is a 20 percent chance this shift will occur before 20z. && Fire weather...a dry cold front will move through northern Utah late this afternoon into this evening. Gusty south winds will develop this afternoon ahead of the cold front across the western portion of Utah. As the cold front passes through the northern portion of fire weather zone 420 this afternoon and early evening...winds will shift to the northwest and humidities will increase. Across the remainder of the warned area...southerly winds and low humidities will continue to create severe fire weather conditions into the evening. && Slc watches/warnings/advisories... Utah...red flag warning from noon until 9 PM Thursday for fire weather zones 420...423...434 and 435. Wyoming...none. && $$ Public...Pomeroy fire weather...Kruse aviation...Seaman For more information from National oceanic and atmospheric administration/S National Weather Service visit... http://weather.Gov/saltlakecity (all lower case)
