Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Duluth Minnesota
311 PM CST Friday Jan 9 2009

Discussion...
through Monday...
upper level shortwave moving rapidly to southeast. Cold dry surface ridge has suppressed
sig snow accums to the S of our County Warning Area. Sat should remain dry as surface
ridge transits the area. Return of lolvl warm air advection and a pair of quick
moving S/waves in amplifying northwest flow aloft will bring small chances of
snow for sun and Monday...but systems will again be fairly dry. As upper
level ridge amplifies and sharpens along West Coast of
noam...trajectories will bring air down from near the North Pole for
the start of a cold week.

Tuesday through Friday...
a progressive northwesterly flow regime is prognosticated to continue
through the extended period...with temperatures remaining near or
below normal. A series of shortwaves from Canada are expected to dig
southeast across the upper Midwest. However the only shortwave that
has the potential to bring appreciable snowfall to our County Warning Area will
arrive on Tuesday. Because of the cold pattern...there will continue
to be a chance of lake effect snow showers along the South Shore of
Lake Superior through the extended period as well.

&&

Aviation...
areas of MVFR ceilings will affect the twin ports area through early
this evening. Otherwise VFR conditions are expected through
Saturday.
