Now

Fog and periods of rain are expected this evening and overnight as several rain bands work north across the area. At 700 PM...the first band of rain was north of a line from Merrill...to Marinette...to Sturgeon Bay. Visibilities within the area experiencing the steady rain were at least a couple of miles. Areas to the south of the band were experiencing a lull in the precipitation...with just some occasional light rain and drizzle. Visibilities in these areas were decreasing...with many stations reporting 1/4 to 1 mile visibilities. Even farther south...another band of rain was developing in southern Wisconsin. A few thunderstorms were embedded in this band. This band will shift north...and should affect central and east-central Wisconsin during the middle and late evening hours. Visibilities are expected to vary during the night. At times when steady rain is falling...visibilities of a mile or two are likely. During lulls in the precipitation...visibilities will fall...and could drop to less than 1/4 mile at times. Anyone traveling tonight should expect to encounter variable conditions. If you encounter dense fog while driving...it is important to slow down to the point where you can safely stop your vehicle within the distance illuminated by your headlights. Be sure to always turn on your headlights...even in the daytime. Always use your low-beam headlights.

Dense Fog Advisory  Statement as of 8:48 PM CST on March 11, 2010

... Dense fog advisory in effect until noon CST Friday...

The National Weather Service in Green Bay has issued a dense fog
advisory... which is in effect until noon CST Friday.

* Visibilities will fall to less than 1/4 mile at times tonight
and Friday morning. Visibilities near zero are possible... especially
in the vicinity of open fields that still have a snow cover.

* Visibilities this low will make travel very hazardous.

* Scattered rain showers will shift across the area tonight. The
visibility will temporarily improve in the vicinity of the
heavier showers... but will drop back down again once the rain
ends.

* A more sustained improvement in conditions should begin during
the late morning on Friday.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A dense fog advisory means visibilities will frequently be
reduced to less than one quarter mile. If driving... slow down...
use your low-beam headlights... and leave plenty of distance
between your vehicle and the one in front of you.

... Air quality watch for the southern two thirds of Wisconsin...

Wisconsin continues to be in a very stagnant air pattern.
It is possible that particle pollution concentrations will reach
unhealthy levels for people in sensitive groups across the majority
of the state especially during the morning hours. Due to the
potential of elevated levels of particle pollution in the region the
Wisconsin department of natural resources has issued an air quality
watch for today. This watch will be in affect until 11 PM tonight.

The air quality watch affects people living in the Wisconsin
counties of Brown... Calumet... Kewaunee... Manitowoc... Marathon...
Outagamie... Portage... Shawano... Waushara... Waupaca... Winnebago...
and wood.

To help prevent pollution from reaching unhealthy levels... people in
the watch area are encouraged to help decrease air pollution by
reducing driving when possible... avoid burning... minimize vehicle
engine idling... postpone using small gas or diesel powered outdoor
equipment... and practice energy conservation.

For current information on air quality readings please call the
daily air hotline at 1-866-daily air or 1-866-324-5924.

Area forecast discussion...updated
National Weather Service Green Bay WI
828 PM CST Thursday Mar 11 2010

Update...will be issuing a fog.Y for areas along and S of Highway
29. Scat showers and isolated thunderstorms and rain over southern WI will shift north tonight.
During periods when rain falls...atmosphere should get mixed up enough to
allow visibilities to bounce back up to a mile or two. But visibilities could
get very low (1/8 or 1/16sm or less) during lulls in the rain.

Visibilities in the north still better...and rain wrapping nwwd from Lake
Michigan/lower Michigan should be more persistent there. Will keep
the north out of advisory for now...though still need to monitor closely.

Updated product suite will be out as soon as possible.
