NWS Forecaster Discussion
648 fxus64 kmrx 171501 cca afdmrx Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Morristown Tennessee 1100 am EDT Sat may 17 2008 Discussion...fog and stratus slow to burn off this morning. Temperatures off to a cool start lowered maximum temperatures a few degrees. Son Previous discussion: short term...(today and tonight)...very dry air working into the region this morning...per water vapor satellite pics and surface observations. Surface ridge extends from Tennessee Valley NE across central Appalachians...and as westerly winds decreased...temperatures cooled to near dew point temperatures in many locations. Seeing some patchy fog develop due to wet grounds...but don't expect visibility to be reduced below 3 miles in general. Min temperatures on the way to dropping below MOS for lows this morning. A dry and mostly sunny day ahead...which should favor the milder maximum temperatures from GFS MOS. Think that shortwave energy in the northwest flow aloft and associated cold front...will mainly affect northern most areas very late tonight. Trimmed probability of precipitation back for this evening and after midnight hours...in line with latest model guidance and reasonable given dry nature of airmass initially. Overall...just slight adjustments made to previous forecast grids with rain chances kept very near MOS blend...and in good agreement with neighboring grids. Long term...(sunday through friday)...with upper trough still over eastern US and northwest flow aloft in place another cold front will pass through the Tennessee Valley Sunday. Showers will be likely with chance of thunderstorms south where airmass more unstable. This system will pass quickly with some drying Sunday night and Monday but next system will come around western ridge and drop into forecast area Monday night and Tuesday. For Wednesday through Friday period models try to build ridge over the southeast but with moisture still present left slight chance of showers and thunderstorms for the period. With trough moving out temperatures will warm into the upper 70s and lower 80s. && Preliminary point temps/pops...
