Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Salt Lake City Utah
951 am MST Friday Jan 9 2009

Synopsis...a Pacific storm system over northern Utah will continue
southeast through the state today. Strengthening high pressure along
the West Coast will maintain a mild northwest flow across the Great
Basin through the weekend.

&&

Discussion...the cold front has about cleared the forecast area
this morning...with the boundary located near the Utah/Arizona border.
The upper trough is continuing southeast...and there is an area of
thicker clouds near the center...which is situated over southwest
Utah. Instability showers continue in the vicinity of the 500 mb
cold pool that is situated over northern Utah...though
accumulations from these showers remain light. The showers will
taper off this afternoon as the cold pool shifts east and high
pressure begins to move in behind the exiting trough. With this in
mind...will allow the existing winter weather headlines to expire
as scheduled at 11 am. Will update the zones at that time to
remove the headlines. No additional updates planned.

High pressure along the California coast is expected to build over
the weekend...keeping a drier northwest flow over most of the
state. However...models indicate weak shortwaves grazing northeast
Utah and southwest Wyoming both Saturday and Sunday that would
keep a more moist airmass over that part of the forecast area and
limit warming aloft. Still...the clearing skies over the forecast
area combined with snow cover make fog a possibility over some
valley locations tonight and tomorrow night.

As the ridge expands early next week...drier and warmer air is
expected to spread across the entire region. This would result in
valley inversions and the possibility of urban haze problems by
midweek.

&&

Aviation...VFR conditions expected at slc terminal with ceilings below
7 kft through this afternoon. There is a 20 percent chance of
temporary MVFR conditions in a scattered rain/snow shower through
20z. Northwest winds at slc terminal will continue until winds shift
to the southeast around 03z this evening.
