NWS Forecaster Discussion
358 fxus63 kfsd 061552 rra afdfsd Area forecast discussion for southeast South Dakota/southwest Minnesota/northwest Iowa National Weather Service Sioux Falls South Dakota 1055 am CDT Sat Sep 6 2008 Discussion... active short term forecast today with band of showers entering western portions of forecast area and fog lingering in northwest Iowa. Have raised probability of precipitation mainly west of I 29 throughout the day for mainly light shower activity. Kicr has picked up 15 hundreths of an inch thus far and expect amounts to be similar in far western County Warning Area. As band shifts east...focus should shift further south as frontogenetic band develops along the Missouri River. This band is expected to lift northeast through the overnight hours...and have begun the trend of raising probability of precipitation. The other concern is the lingering fog across northwest Iowa...especially down near the Sioux City area. Cloud cover hampering mixing...so expect fog to gradually lift through the late morning hours. Low clouds and fog has really limited warming...and have trimmed highs back a few degrees. Updated forecast posted. && Aviation... lingering fog across northwest Iowa especially in the River Valley near Sioux City should gradually lift late this morning. A band of light rain showers will shift east through eastern South Dakota with an upper level disturbance near the Nebraska border. These showers should not produce restricted ceilings or visibilities. Shower activity is expected to become more widespread into the evening and overnight a trough pushes ewrd. && Previous discussion... areas of fog east of i29 should dissipate early this morning as higher clouds move in eliminating any additional rad cooling. Focus shifts to this afternoon and overnight as short wave pushes eastward across the northern plains. Clouds associated with feature should spread across all of County Warning Area this morning with mostly cloudy skies expected today. With cool air in place...temperatures will be affected by cloud cover and will be several degrees below norm. Most places should see highs from 65 to 70...although a few places could see lower 70s. Think bulk of rain will hold off until tonight...but will spread chance into west and far southern County Warning Area this afternoon. Looks like a good chance of r across County Warning Area tonight. Could be an isolated thunderstorm but not Worth mentioning. Rainfall amounts will generally be light...pbly less than 0.25 most places. Will see some lingering rain shower- across eastern County Warning Area Sun morning...with some breaks in the clouds west spreading east during the afternoon. Still will be chilly with highs in the 60s. Yet another short wave will move across Nebraska late Sun night into Monday and will need to keep chance of rain shower mainly S of i90 late sun into Monday. Not much if any moderation in high temperatures on Monday...and pbly will be a little cooler S due to more clouds and precipitation. Monday night should be coolest night of the week. May need to watch for patchy frost pot across eastern County Warning Area Tuesday morning as surface high drops into Iowa. Would expect light winds and mostly clear skies by Tuesday morning. Should warm up nicely Tuesday into Wednesday with temperatures back into 70s and lower 80s. Looks like a decent chance of thunderstorm Wednesday afternoon/night ahead of next short wave and cold front. Of course it will be highly dependent on timing and how much llm returns ahead of short wave. && Fsd watches/warnings/advisories... South Dakota...none. Minnesota...none Iowa...none. NE...none. && $$
