Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Elko Nevada
238 am PDT Sat Jul 5 2008

Synopsis...a low pressure system will move through northern Nevada
bringing slightly cooler temperatures to the region and a slight
risk of thunderstorms to northeast Nevada during the Independence day
weekend. High pressure is expected to rebuild over the Great Basin
next week resulting in hot temperatures and dry weather.
&&

Short term...today through Sunday...infrared imagery shows that most
cloudiness associated with the cold front today has exited east of
the state this morning. Short term models in pretty good agreement
on latest runs. The Great Basin will be under the influence of weak
low pressure through Sunday as high pressure continues to dissolve.
Lower levels will be stable today with Post-frontal short-wave
ridging pushing across the area. Precipitable water values have
fallen well-below 0.5 inches. One more strong shortwave will pass
through northern Nevada...on Sunday...with precipitable water values increasing to
around 0.75 inches accompanying low-level convergence. GFS and NAM
both show a 70 knots jet feature pushing across northern Nevada late Saturday and
into Sunday. This next system is lacking any strong pressure gradient
with dry westerly flow on Saturday turning more northwest on Sunday.
Wind will not be an issue. Forecast looks good for placement of
isolated thunderstorms primarily over NE Nevada. Still no significant
moisture source...so ts will be essentially dry. High temperatures
will be a relatively cool 90 degrees Saturday and Sunday before ridge
begins to build...however still above-normal. Lw

Long term...Sunday night through Friday. A ridge will build off the
coast of California and will last until the end of the week when
a trough of low pressure begins to approach the West Coast on
Friday. This will allow high temperatures to reach into the upper
90s across the County Warning Area. Lows will drop into the 50s. Ippi
&&

Aviation...VFR conditions will prevail across the County Warning Area with the
exception of some isolated thunderstorm development along the
northern border this afternoon and evening.
&&

Fire weather...no proposed fire weather issues for the next couple
days. Low pressure will hang over the area through Sunday. Winds
will be relatively light and temperatures slightly above-
normal...I.E. Upper 80 to middle 90s. Isolated thunderstorms are
possible Sunday afternoon across zone 452 and northern 455. Relative humidity
levels will continue to fall into the single digits Sat and Sun
afternoon across central Nevada.
