Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Midland/Odessa Texas
224 PM CDT Friday Jul 18 2008

Discussion...
an upper level low near the Texas coast will drift westward the
next several days with subsidence translating on the west side of
this feature toward West Texas. Expecting precipitation chances
the next several days to be confined to the western portion of the
forecast area...mainly in the mountains and the immediate adjacent
plains furthest away from the sinking air in the higher middle level
Theta-E air. The steering flow aloft out of the east is not
conducive for the storms to translate into the Permian Basin. High
temperatures in the plains will increase with a decent amount of
sunshine due to the subsidence. This upper low is forecast to pass
across northern Mexico early next week with the better middle level
Theta-E air continuing to reside over the aforementioned western
section. Will continue isolated to widely scattered showers and
thunderstorms for these areas Monday and Tuesday. Interestingly
the guidance is not forecasting higher Theta-E or precipitation
across the Permian Basin Monday or Tuesday northeast of this
feature that would occur typically. This will need to be monitored
the next couple of days. By next Wednesday the upper low will have
moved west of the forecast area with an upper level ridge building
southward across the area with easterly middle level flow. This
pattern does not look conducive to precipitation and will not
mention even in the higher terrain. Temperatures will continue to
be near seasonal normals.
