Isolated showers are forecast to develop over south central and southwest Mississippi and northeast Louisiana early this afternoon. Slow movement of the showers will result in locally heavy rainfall of a quarter to half inch...but most places will stay dry. As we go later into the afternoon...a few thunderstorms could pop up as well...especially over northeast Louisiana.

Area forecast discussion...updated
National Weather Service Jackson MS
1113 am CDT Friday Jul 18 2008

Discussion...mostly sunny skies have prevailed this morning across
the region. Locations across the area have already warmed into the
middle and upper 80s. An upper level trough axis sits just to our west
associated with an upper level low that is spinning along the Gulf
Coast near the Texas coast.

For today...broad upper level ridging is expected to prevail across
the area with surface high pressure moving into the eastern portions
of the County Warning Area. The best area for any shower or thunderstorm development
looks to be in the western zones where the upper trough axis resides
and continues to move off to the west. This is also where the best
instability is....albeit rather meager. However...with precipitable waters of
1.7-1.8 inches off the 12z kjan radiosonde observation...cannot rule out any
convection or the possibility of some decent downpours with any
storm that develops. However...coverage appears to be small and have
kept the 10 probability of precipitation going for this afternoon. It appears that the east
is least likely to see much in the way of convection given the drier
air that looks to move in with the ridging. Sea breeze potential
looks to be a minimum today with 850 flow being more easterly and
unfavorable for any storms to move inland much.

This all being said...I have raised high temperatures mainly in the
central/east and southeast to account for the faster warming trend
and for the probable lack of widespread...or any if
all...convection. This will allow temperatures to reach into the middle 90s
with the lowest highs expected in the west where best convection
chances occur. Other than this...have tweaked hourly
temperatures...dewpoints and sky cover to account for observational trends.
Updated products already out and posted to the web. /28/

Aviation...no changes to previous aviation discussion. Isolated
showers and thunderstorms will continue to be possible across the
region this afternoon and early evening...but for the most part
locations should count on dry weather and VFR conditions. Scattered
decks will continue this afternoon with occasional ceilings from
4000-6000 feet. Ceilings will be briefly lower in isolated showers or
thunderstorms mainly at Jan/glh. Patchy areas of fog will be possible
early tomorrow morning. /15/ec/
