Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Caribou ME
228 PM EDT Thursday Aug 21 2008

Synopsis...
high pressure will continue to build across the region into the
upcoming weekend. This will bring dry and warm weather to the
region into Sunday. A cold front will approach from west Sunday
night and then cross the region during Monday. High pressure will
then build across the region for much of next week.
&&

Near term /through Friday/...
center of high pressure ridge west of the region this afternoon
will slowly move eastward and crest the state by Friday afternoon.
Strong subsidence with the upper ridge will keep skies clear and
create very warm temperatures with most locations warming into the
middle 80s by Friday afternoon. Weak southwest flow along the coast
will keep temperatures a bit cooler for coastal locations Friday.
&&

Short term /Friday night through Sunday/...
high pressure at the surface and aloft will continue to build
across the region through Saturday. This will result in dry
and warm weather conditions into the upcoming weekend. The upper
ridge will begin to flatten out during Sunday as the next upper
trough approaches from the west. This trough will push a cold
front toward the region later Sunday afternoon with increasing
clouds and the chance for showers and thunderstorms during Sunday
afternoon.
&&

Long term /Sunday night through Thursday/...
the cold front will continue to move east toward the region Sunday
night and early Monday. This will result in a continued chance for
showers and thunderstorms into Sunday night. There still may be
some lingering showers into Monday before the front moves east of
the region by afternoon. Dry weather will return for Monday night
and then persist through much of next week as high pressure builds
across the region once again.
&&

Aviation /18z Thursday through Tuesday/...
VFR conditions are expected to persist into Sunday. There may be
some MVFR conditions developing by late Sunday afternoon and
Sunday night as a cold from approaches the region with the chance
of showers and thunderstorms. A return to VFR conditions is expected
Monday through Tuesday.
&&

Marine...
near term: high pressure will keep winds and seas below Small Craft Advisory
criteria tonight and Friday. Used a blend of the nam12 and GFS for
winds and the wnawave for seas.
Short term: winds/seas will remain below Small Craft Advisory levels through the
period.
