NWS Forecaster Discussion
328 fxus64 klix 240838 afdlix Area forecast discussion National Weather Service New Orleans la 338 am CDT Thursday Jul 24 2008 Synopsis... Dolly now well inland over deep south Texas. High pressure centered near Chicago this morning. Upper pattern dominated by a trough over the East Coast and an upper ridge over the Great Plains. Cirrus shield over our area has been diminishing over the land mass overnight. Scattered showers and thunderstorms offshore...mainly west of the Atchafalaya River. Temperatures and dewpoints near seasonal norms early this morning. && Short term... not much change to previous forecast thinking. Upper ridge pushes back in from the west as Dolly undercuts it. Trending toward GFS solution for rain chances today...as GOES sounder data supports the somewhat drier airmass that the GFS is depicting. NAM tends to keep precipitable water values close to 2 inches...while the GFS is a more reasonable 1.65. With the exception of some convection moving just on shore after sunrise...most of the convection the next 3 days will be diurnally driven. As we get closer to Saturday...areal coverage may actually be higher in eastern sections...as they will be more vulnerable to impulses moving through the base of the eastern trough. Temperatures will warm about a category from wednesday's readings. This is more due to lesser cloud cover than to a change in airmass. Generally...highs in the lower and middle 90s with lows in the 70s. && Long term... not much change. Upper trough over the East Coast and ridge over The Rockies and Western Plains. Diurnal convection and temperatures slightly above normal can be expected. && Aviation... areal coverage of convection will not be high enough this afternoon to carry as prevailing in tafs. VFR conditions anticipated through the forecast period. && Marine... seas and winds have dropped below small craft criteria...so advisory has been dropped. No further flags anticipated through the forecast period. && Preliminary point temps/pops... mcb 92 72 95 73 / 30 20 20 10 btr 92 74 95 74 / 40 20 20 10 msy 92 76 93 77 / 30 20 20 10 gpt 91 75 93 74 / 30 20 20 10 && Lix watches/warnings/advisories... la...none.
