... .swath of damaging downburst winds with embedded microbursts hits
parts of southwest Illinois on Tuesday evening August 5 2008...

National Weather Service personnel from St. Louis surveyed damage
caused by a large swath of downburst winds with several microbursts
embedded within the larger burst swath. The greatest area of damage
extended across from western Jersey County through parts of southern
Montgomery and northern Bond counties in southwest Illinois.

One microburst hit the Jerseyville Illinois area and caused
extensive tree damage in and around town around 6:00 PM CDT. The
greatest swath of tree damage occurred over the central and eastern
parts of the town. Winds damaged roofs of three businesses in a
shopping mall near the south side the city limits. Several large
tree limbs damaged roofs and gutters on several homes while other
large limbs damage vehicles. Numerous power lines in town were were
downed by the high winds. Several witnesses reported that the
duration of the high winds lasted as much as between 3 to 5 minutes
with the strongest winds occurring during the early part of the
period of damaging winds. Winds were estimated between 65 to 75 mph.
Trees fell on a few homes 2 miles north of Brighton Illinois along
Highway 267.

Additional microbursts were identified south of Shipman and south of
Bunker Hill in southern Macoupin County. One Mobile home 4 miles
east of Brighton Illinois was damaged by two large fallen trees.
Another home 1.5 miles south of Bunker Hill was damage by a fallen
tree. One amateur radio operator measured winds of 71 mph 2 mile
south of Shipman at 640 PM CDT. Small outbuildings and a few barns
were damaged from east of Jerseyville through and south of The
Bunker hill area. Again witnesses over parts of southern Macoupin
County reported that the duration of damaging winds lasted 3 to 5
minutes. There was no hail reported with the storm.

Another concentrated area of damage extended from The Mount Olive
through washville and east-southeast to the Coffeen Lake area in
southern Montgomery County Illinois. A very large tree fell on top
of a two story home east of washville while power poles were
snappted and corn flatten northest of Panama Illinois. Based on the
damage winds were estimated between 65 to 75 mph over this area.

Another area of downburst winds extended from 5 miles west to 8
miles east southeast of the Litchfield area. Several large tree
limbs and a few large trees were down over this area.

Additional information on this storm event will be posted shortly on
the events archive link website on the WFO St. Louis web Page.

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service St Louis MO
328 PM CDT Thursday Aug 7 2008

Discussion...
/327 PM CDT Thursday Aug 7 2008/
will see ridge of high pressure build in and remain over region
through most of the weekend...with pleasant weather in store for
this time of year. However...radar showing some isolated cells
developing over forecast area as of 20z as a weak disturbance moves
through. So will update afternoon and early evening grids to account
for them.

Otherwise...for rest of tonight...will see clearing skies with
dewpoints dipping into the upper 50s by daybreak. So with clear
skies and light winds...low temperatures will be in the lower 60s.

On Friday and Saturday...expect sunny skies with highs only in the
low to middle 80s and lows in the 60s.

Ridge will begin to move off to our southeast by Sunday with models
generating an mesoscale convective system. Feel that GFS has a better handle on it with mesoscale convective system
tracking from western Kansas southeastward into Arkansas...while NAM
is way too far north in its placement/development and has overdone
its quantitative precipitation forecast values. So will side with the GFS...with just slight chance
probability of precipitation over County Warning Area Sunday and Sunday night. Will see better chances of
storms as main system moves closer to forecast area...so raised probability of precipitation
to chance catagory for Monday through Tuesday...before tapering off
Tuesday night. As for rest extended...will see dry weather.
