evening for Idaho zones 409 410 412 and 477 for gusty winds and
low relative humidity...
A cold front aloft will arrive the area this afternoon. The

are either occurring now... or will shortly. A combination of
strong winds... low relative humidity... and warm temperatures will
create explosive fire growth potential.

NWS Forecaster Discussion
138 fxus65 kpih 182053 afdpih Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Pocatello Idaho 253 PM MDT Friday Jul 18 2008 Discussion...British Columbia low continues to move east this evening with trailing surface frontal boundary through central Montana and Lemhi County supported by 85kt jet. Isolated thunderstorms developing vicinity of Monida Pass and Spencer with the frontal band moving towards Island Park the next 3 to 6 hours. For the most part...surface winds are a little weaker this afternoon than advertised by the models yesterday. Winds are strong enough for the lake Wind Advisory for American Falls Reservoir but very marginal for the red flag warning currently in effect. High pressure ridge will dominate forecast area on Saturday...therefore no mention of thunderstorms in the afternoon. GFS indicates another disturbance from near 135w crosses forecast area in confluent flow pattern on Sunday. Monsoon moisture continues to be advertised in models rotating through Arizona and Utah Sunday and Monday with some of this moisture trying to make it into Idaho. Progression of trough near northern California coast appears to be a problem in the models. GFS has slowed this trough down from moving into Idaho Monday back to Tuesday and phasing it with short wave energy crossing British Columbia about that time. That would also shunt the monsoon moisture away from this area again. Uncertainty in details still abounds. Receiver station && Aviation...widespread VFR with isolated evening thunderstorms in the central mountains and upper snake Highlands. Dsh && Fire weather...the red flag warning for 409 410 412 and 477 will be allowed to continue for now. Wind speeds are generally below required thresholds with relative humidity at several sites either near or below critical levels. Conditions are close enough to keep the red flag in place for early this evening. Dsh && Pih watches/warnings/advisories... red flag warning until 10 PM MDT this evening for idz409-410-412- 477. Lake Wind Advisory until 9 PM MDT this evening for idz021. && $$
