Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service quadrant cities Iowa Illinois
1143 am CDT Friday Jul 18 2008

Update...
have updated Flash Flood Watch to begin at 7 PM this evening and
have also added a few more counties. Short wave seen on visible
satellite moving across Iowa and northern MO producing stratiform
rain over portions of southern Iowa. Low level flow is weak and have
not had any lightning. Plenty of cloud cover also keeping airmass
from destabilizing. Therefore the threat of heavy rain has
diminished for this afternoon. However with rain area moving
northeast into parts of the dvn County Warning Area and breaks in the clouds will
continue with likely probability of precipitation for showers and a few thunderstorms.
Also any leftover boundaries may ignite some convection.

Widespread two to four inches of rain fell last evening in our
northwest and western County Warning Area. Flash flood guidance values are less
than 2 inches. Another short wave seen to the west in South Dakota continues
to generate an area of thunderstorms as it heads in our direction.
With the short wave tonight and low level jet intensifying the
threat of heavy rain and flash flooding will increase. Airmass
very moist with precipitable waters over 2 inches which is over 150
percent of normal. Deep moisture in the column will support
torrential rains.

&&

Aviation...
MVFR conditions occurring at kcid and kdbq where ground is moist
from last nights rains. These sites will have occasional broken MVFR ceilings
this afternoon. Kmli and kbrl will have VFR conditions with middle and
high level clouds. An area of showers and a few storms will be
over the region this afternoon with a larger area of thunderstorms
developing this evening and overnight.
