NWS Forecaster Discussion
670 fxhw60 phfo 181930 afdhfo Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Honolulu HI 1000 am HST Friday Jul 18 2008 Synopsis... brisk trade winds continue due to the strong high pressure center far north of the state. Weather will be a little wetter this weekend than would normally be expected for middle Summer due to an upper level trough. && Discussion... overnight shower activity was relatively widespread across the islands...mainly windward and near mountains as well as just leeward of mountains and also over windward Big Island in the Hilo district. Rain gages reported around one quarter to one half inch of precipitation in the 6 hours ending at 8 am at a number of locations on Kauai Oahu and windward Maui. Satellite imagery shows showery and somewhat unstable appearing clouds this morning moving onto the islands from Oahu to The Big Island. Saturday in particular is apt to again be showery. A short wave rotates through the middle atmospheric upper low on Saturday which will supply additional strength to the passing trade showers. These showers will at times also affect the Lee areas. A relatively strong surface high north of the main Hawaiian islands will maintain moderate to fresh trade winds through next week. The morning balloon soundings show the temperature inversion ranges from 9 to around 11 thousand feet...allowing for enhanced shower activity. The brisk easterlies through the low level of the atmosphere should keep showers moving enough to prevent any significant flooding problems. Models agree in carrying remnant moisture from the former tropical system Elida across or just south of the islands Wednesday. Wind Advisory will likely be issued for The Summit area of Haleakala for today and perhaps into this evening. Winds have increased to just above the 30 miles per hour criteria due to strength of surface high to the north. && Marine... trade winds still strong enough today and tonight for Small Craft Advisory for several of the typically windier areas. Current south swell decreasing but another small south swell is expected Sunday. && Hfo watches/warnings/advisories... Small Craft Advisory for pailolo and alenuihaha channels...Maalaea Bay and waters south of The Big Island. && $$ Hoag
