Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Medford or
933 PM PDT Wednesday Jul 23 2008

Discussion...no significant changes needed to the forecast this
evening. Expect dry conditions tonight through early Friday with
weak ridging over the area. Will also see a warming trend tomorrow
with highs several degrees warmer than today for inland locations.
Low clouds and patchy fog are expected to develop overnight along
the coast north of Cape Blanco and into the Coquille Valley...with
clearing in the middle morning. Then...Friday evening a trough
offshore is forecast to gradually move inland. The GFS and NAM are
indicating a slight chance for light precipitation along the Coos
coast early Saturday with this disturbance and elsewhere dry. The
GFS and NAM indicate that onshore flow behind this trough passage
may bring a marine push of low clouds into Coos and Douglas
counties Saturday night.

&&

Aviation...VFR conditions expected all locations tonight...
however...marine stratus will cause a few hours of LIFR
conditions at North Bend and other localized areas along the Coos
and Douglas coast and into the Coquille Valley late tonight and
early Thursday morning.

&&

Previous discussion... /issued 238 PM PDT Wednesday Jul 23 2008/

Discussion...short wave trough brought dry westerly flow aloft
into the forecast area today. Current visible imagery showing
little or no clouds...but areas of smoke remain across portions of
Siskiyou and Modoc counties. A weak ridge of high pressure will
build into the area tonight and skies will generally be clear.
This will allow temperatures to drop off nicely and lows should be
at least a few degrees below normal. Marine stratus not expected
to be as widespread as last night...but some is expected to
redevelop along the coastal waters especially from Cape Blanco
northward and also around Brookings.

Any marine intrusion tomorrow will give way to sunshine by middle-
late morning along the coast and the remainder of the region will
be sunny and dry. Expect temperatures to moderate slightly from
today's maximums.

Not much change is expected Friday. GFS and European model (ecmwf) showing another
trough approaching the coast Friday night into Saturday. Expect
much of the energy from this system to remain to our north...so
not going to introduce any precipitation into the forecast. It may
shave a couple of degrees off maximum temperatures...but again
overall not much change.

Beyond that...all indications point to a continued west-southwest
flow aloft for the second half of the weekend and into early next
week. This will keep dry weather in the forecast with temperatures
near to slightly above average.
